Traveller Tips

FIND OUT ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TRAVEL TO A HOST OF LUXURY DESTINATIONS ABOARD THE VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS TRAIN.

Can I smoke on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train?

No. To comply with Italian and other European regulations, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train operates a no smoking policy on board both the Belmond British Pullman and the continental train.

What do I wear on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train?

You can never be overdressed on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train. For dinner, we ask that men wear a suit and tie and women dress in smart attire, but many guests like to don black tie or evening dress for the occasion. During the day the dress code is smartcasual. At lunch, for example, a jacket and tie is suitable for men. Jeans are not acceptable at any time.

What languages do staff on board the train speak?

French, English and Italian are spoken by most stewards on board the continental train.

What to Wear For daytime?

Excursions and relaxing on board, we suggest casual, comfortable attire. In the evening, we recommend a jacket and tie for dinner.#

What currency do I need on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train?

Prices are quoted in Euros and it is recommended that passengers have a small number of Euros for onboard purchases. However, most major currencies are accepted, as well as travellers’ cheques, Eurocheques and major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and JCB). The exchange rate on board is displayed in the Bar Car.

How long does my journey take?

Will I need insurance for my trip?

As with all holidays and trips abroad, it is advisable to have travel insurance. Your Belmond Reservations Office will be able to advise you.

Will there be room in my compartment for all my luggage?

Despite having luggage racks in our cabins, space constraints require that luggage is limited, per passenger, to: one suitable piece of hand luggage, one suit carrier or overnight bag (to be placed in your cabin), and one suitcase to be stored in the baggage car, where it will not be accessible until you reach your destination.

Will I need to tip the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express staff?

Any gratuities you wish to give are entirely at your discretion.

Passport and Visas

With the uncertainty surrounding 'Brexit', we would recommend (and it may become law) the following for all travel requiring passports:
1. You should ensure you have at least 6 months’ validity left on your passport from your date of arrival. This applies to both adult and child passports.
2. If you renewed a passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your new passport’s expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months that should be remaining for travel to most countries in Europe. While the law is only likely to change for UK and EU passport holders, we recommend that all passport holders check with your national government agency for up-to-date information. We would also note that security and immigration checks are likely to be increased, adding time to your journey at entry and exits points within Europe and the UK, so we would recommend you allow extra time at these points.

HISTORY

In 1977 Belmond’s founder, James B Sherwood, purchased two vintage train carriages at a Monte Carlo auction.

Recognising a renewed appetite for sophisticated travel, he searched far and wide to unearth stately rail relics in private gardens, museums and railway sidings. Cars from famous vintage trains, including Le Train Bleu and the Rome Express, deserved a noble return to service, but required a specialised level of craftsmanship to be restored. Luckily a handful of artisans were found for the task, and they began the painstaking process of returning the carriages to their former glory.

Following years of careful restoration, the iconic midnight-blue cars finally rolled onto the rails in 1982, ready to escort guests in peerless luxury on a classic journey between London and Venice.
